NOTTINGHAM TRAMS

Refresh of advertising poster cases at Nottingham tram shelters

Nottingham Trams - Nottingham Express Transit (NET) offers a green, convenient and affordable way to travel through the the City and the surrounding areas.

Nottingham Trams approached John E Wright & Co. Ltd to help refresh their tram shelters. The work consisted of replacing all hardware at each tram shelter and the safe decommission of existing units. The project would span from; Nottingham Station through to Hucknall and Phoenix Park tram lines.

As part of the brief we would include an audit of the networks existing hardware at each tram shelter and document our findings. This ensured that hardware was manufactured to the correct size at each location and from this we could develop a scope of work.

The total number of tram stops we would cover over this period would be twenty three. Some locations having as many as four shelters at each site.

The immediate challenges to this project was the close proximity to the general public when carrying out such work. Our install teams would be working at the very tram stops that people would be doing their daily commutes from each day. Safe working practices, thorough planning and reviewing is essential

The teams involved in the installation had the relevant NET track safety inductions, which generally they would only need if they were physically working on the tram lines. Chapter 8 barriers would be required to zone off a safe working area and full PPE worn at all times. The teams informed the NET Control room via intercom as they arrived and progressed at each location

Each tram stop has it's own logistic challenges, these would be identified at the audit stage, so a safe route to the tram stop would be discussed prior to moving each unit and we made sure to utilize special trolleys to calculate and maneuverer heavy loads safely.

Toolbox talks about the site locations and project would be implemented at each stage via the lead fitter and Operation Manager to ensure safety is at the forefront of the operation, followed by good communication and understanding of the task at hand.

The advertising cases were made from a strong extruded aluminium frame, powder coated in a specific RAL colour. Doors were hinged from the sides of the unit and gas door struts were fitted to the top and bottom to aid the opening and closing of the units. 6mm PETG screens were inserted into weather-resistant seals - this borders the printed graphics. Each unit came with two secure locks and keys.

All existing hardware was returned to the NET depot at the end of each shift where they would dispose of responsibly.
